Strength and Conditioning Services

Strength and Conditioning at its simplest form is the practical application of sports science to enhance movement quality. Strength and conditioning is greatly supported by the knowledge of evidence-based research, exercise physiology and functional anatomy.

Strength and conditioning is not just for athletes. Anyone can benefit from strength and conditioning for injury prevention, better quality of movement, correcting muscle imbalances and enhancing muscular function, mood and general well-being.

At Athletic Rehabilitation Physiotherapy, we pride ourselves on utilising our strength and conditioning knowledge while tailoring your rehabilitation programs. We closely monitor and analyse your movement patterns while employing specific functional tests to determine your baseline function as the basis of your rehabilitation program.

Your rehabilitation program will be tailored to your primary goals, such as improving strength / improving speed / improving agility / improving balance in contact sports / improving cardiovascular function and more. Our goal is to enhance your baseline physical function while providing the best recovery treatments throughout the rehabilitation.

Western Dry Needling

Dry needling involves the use of sterile, single-use, fine filament needles for the treatment of musculoskeletal conditions and injuries. It aims to address pain and dysfunction in the soft tissue by providing pain relief and restoring function through the release of myofascial trigger points (knots in muscle).

All of our physiotherapists are proficient and qualified in applying dry needling. Common injuries treated through this procedure include low back pain, neck pain, whiplash, frozen shoulder, shoulder pain, elbow pain, knee pain and ankle sprains etc.

Traditional Flame Cupping

At Athletic Rehabilitation Physiotherapy, our team are all qualified for providing cupping therapy for our clients to ensure that we can provide the highest quality of care for pain management throughout rehabilitation and treatments.

Cupping is a therapy that originated in China. Its technique of placing cups on the skin to create a suction has been practised for centuries. The therapy was originally performed with the use of animal horns, and later the cups were made from bamboo and then glass and ceramic.

Traditional Flame Cupping techniques can be used to treat a number of conditions. It is most popular for its ability to manage myofascial scar tissue, restoring joint range of motion and alleviating muscle tension and pain. Cupping is generally recommended as a treatment method for:

  • Acute and Chronic Pain
  • Stiff joints and muscles
  • Gastrointestinal disorders
  • Lung dysfunction (especially chronic cough and asthma)
  • Anxiety
  • Fatigue
  • Headaches or Migraines
  • Rheumatism

Headaches

Cervical dysfunction is commonly the underlying cause of ongoing headaches. Hence, treating the neck and surrounding areas of the cervical spine effectively can significantly improve the symptoms of headaches. At Athletic Rehabilitation Physiotherapy clinic, we evaluate your past medical history and carefully assess the potential causes of your headaches.

Our physiotherapists can utilise their skills and hands-on techniques to relieve your headache symptoms. You can also count on us to receive some preventative advice and education on your postural control, sleeping and ergonomic setup of your work environment. Our goal is to keep you both headache and painkiller free.

Chronic & Acute Pain management

If you have at least one chronic medical condition and complex care needs (as determined by your GP), you may be eligible for 5 Care Plan visits to an allied health practitioner under the Medicare Chronic Disease Management (CDM) scheme.

Athletic Rehabilitation Physiotherapy works with you under this scheme to educate you on creating a healthy lifestyle and to provide you strategies to manage your conditions as you receive the hands-on therapy treatments from our experienced team.

Please contact us or your GP about the Chronic Disease Management scheme to see if you are eligible.

Hydrotherapy

Hydrotherapy involves the use of water to treat various conditions, such as arthritis, rheumatic complaints, myomalacia, strokes and acute phase of physical injuries .

Hydrotherapy often requires the individual to undertake different exercises and movements in a warm pool of water. The water temperature in the pool is approximately 33–36ºC.

As you are submerged in water during hydrotherapy treatments, the buoyancy of the water reduces the amount of weight going through your joints, which allows you to rehabilitate in free range of motion without pain.

Our physiotherapists are well experienced in providing hydrotherapy treatments as we understand how important it is to regain strength and free movements without pain during the initial stage of rehabilitation.

Occupational Therapy Services

Pre-Hospital Assessment
Many orthopaedic surgeries require specific equipment in the home environment to facilitate safe and efficient return to independence. With detailed knowledge of post-surgical requirements, an occupational therapist can visit you at home to ensure all equipment and modifications are in place prior to surgery, allowing for an efficient discharge.

Minor Home Modifications
Occupational Therapists are experts in identifying ways to maximise a person’s safety and independence, through minor adjustments to the home environment.
These may include recommendations for:

  • Installing grab rails in the bathroom & toilet
  • Installing threshold ramps
  • Adjusting the style of bathroom taps to allow for easier use
  • Installation of stair lifts

Equipment Prescription
Occupational therapists specialise in performing home assessments for those who have experienced physical and/or cognitive changes from injury or illness, and those planning for the future. They are highly trained in prescribing assistive or adaptive equipment to increase safety and independence throughout daily activities. This may include specialised equipment used for:

  • Bathing, toileting and dressing
  • Eating
  • Communication
  • Seating & pressure care
  • Cooking/meal preparation
  • Mobility

Pressure Care Management
Pressure injuries are caused by prolonged pressure, friction, and/or shear, causing damage to skin and tissue. Older adults, people with neurological impairments, and those who have prolonged periods of immobility are at greatest risk of developing pressure injuries. Occupational therapists can assess risk of developing pressure injuries, as well as provide management of already established pressure areas. Treatment may include prescription of pressure-relieving equipment, as well as educating clients and caregivers on prevention and management of pressure injuries.
